In the afternoon, we begin our city tour of Islamabad. Our first stop is Daman-e-Koh, a scenic viewpoint offering panoramic views over the capital and the surrounding Margalla Hills. We then drive through Islamabad’s wide, modern boulevards, passing elegant buildings that blend contemporary design with Islamic architectural influences.
We continue to the Lok Virsa Folk Heritage Museum, where you will gain insight into Pakistan’s rich cultural traditions and diverse heritage. The tour culminates at one of the largest mosques in the world the magnificent Shah Faisal Mosque, an architectural masterpiece and iconic symbol of the city.

In the morning, transfer to the domestic airport for the flight to Skardu. During the flight you may enjoy stunning views over the Pakistani Himalayas and the mighty Karakoram Range. Please note that flights to Skardu are subject to weather; in case of bad weather, we will travel by road via the Karakoram Highway with an overnight stay at Chilas.
Skardu is the capital of Baltistan and is perched at an altitude of about 2,438 meters above sea level, surrounded by the great peaks of the Karakoram. The Balti people are a mixture of Tibetan and Central Asian ancestry and speak Balti, an ancient form of Tibetan. Due to the similarity of its culture, lifestyle, and architecture with Tibet, Baltistan is often referred to as “Little Tibet.”
After arrival in Skardu, drive to Shigar Valley. On the way, visit the Sarfaranga Cold Desert, known as the world’s highest cold desert at about 7,500 feet. The desert’s sand dunes, set against the dramatic backdrop of the Karakoram mountains, create a unique and striking landscape. Optional ATV or 4×4 jeep rides across the desert can be arranged. Continue the drive to Shigar.

In the morning visit Shigar Fort, which stands on the bank of the Shigar stream and is built upon a massive rock. This historic 17th-century fort once served as the residence of the Raja of Shigar and has been beautifully restored by the Aga Khan Trust for Culture. Today it operates as a heritage hotel and museum and is one of the most impressive historical landmarks in Baltistan.
Nearby we will also visit the Amburiq Mosque, one of the oldest mosques in the region, believed to date back to the 14th century. The mosque reflects the early spread of Islam in Baltistan through the influence of Syed Ali Hamdani.
Later we continue the journey towards Khaplu Valley, travelling along the Indus and Shyok Rivers. The drive passes through traditional Balti villages, green fields, and spectacular mountain scenery.
Khaplu was historically the second largest kingdom in Baltistan under the Yabgo dynasty and played an important role along the trade route to Ladakh. Today it serves as a gateway for trekkers heading towards Hushe Valley and the high peaks of the Karakoram such as Masherbrum, K6, K7, and Chogolisa.

Built in the 19th century, the palace once served as the royal residence of the Raja of Khaplu. It is a remarkable example of traditional Balti architecture, combining Tibetan, Kashmiri, and Central Asian influences. The palace has been restored by the Aga Khan Trust for Culture and now functions as both a museum and heritage hotel.
We then visit the historic Chaqchan Mosque, one of the oldest mosques in Baltistan, dating back to the 14th century. The mosque reflects a unique blend of Tibetan and Islamic architectural styles and marks the period when Islam spread across the region.
Later we take an excursion to Machulo Village, a beautiful Balti village located along the Indus River. The village is known for its scenic setting, traditional houses, and views of the surrounding Karakoram mountains. Spend some time walking through the village and observing the daily life of the local community before returning to Khaplu for overnight.

Later visit Kharpocho Fort, also known as the “King of Forts.” Perched on a hill above Skardu town, the fort was built in the late 16th century by Ali Sher Khan Anchan, one of Baltistan’s most powerful rulers. From the top, the fort offers panoramic views of Skardu town, the Indus River, and the surrounding valleys.
Continue to Manthal Buddha Rock, an 8th-century carving on a large granite rock that reflects the region’s ancient Buddhist heritage.
Afterwards drive to Satpara Lake, a beautiful glacial lake located just outside Skardu. Its clear blue water is fed by surrounding glaciers, and it serves as an important source of drinking water for the town.
